অনেক টাকা দিয়ে কমপিউটার কিনেছেন? কেনার সময়ে ওয়ার‌্যান্টি দেখে নিয়েছিলেন? তবুও সাবধান, Apple একটি কাণ্ড ঘটিয়েছে। আপনি ওয়ার‌্যান্টি সার্ভিস নাও পেতে পারেন। আপনি, কিম্বা আপনার বাড়িতে কেউ যদি ধূমপান করেন এবং আপনার কমপিউটার যদি সেই ধূমপায়ীর কাছাকাছি থাকে, তাহলে Apple আপনাকে সার্ভিস দিতে অস্বীকার করতে পারে। ভাবছেন ইয়ার্কি? নাঃ, পৃথক ঘটনায় জানা গিয়েছে যে Applecare তিনজন আমেরিকান নাগরিককে ওয়ার‌্যান্টি সার্ভিস দিতে অস্বীকার করেছে। সংখ্যাটা আরো বেশি হতে পারে, সেটা জানা যায়নি এখনো।

ব্যাপারটা আমার নিজের কাছেই খুব পরিষ্কার হয়নি। Applecare'এ কমপিউটার নিয়ে গেলে তারা যন্ত্রাংশ সার্ভিসিং করার বদলে কি আগে এইসব পরীক্ষা করে দেখে যে যন্ত্রাংশের মধ্যে সিগারেটের ধোঁয়ার রেশ পাওয়া যাচ্ছে কিনা, নিকোটিনের রেশ পাওয়া যাচ্ছে কিনা? নাহলে এইসব তারা বুঝছে কেমন করে? Apple অবশ্য এইসবের উত্তর দিচ্ছেনা। তারা এটাও বলছেনা যে ১'টা নাকি ১০০'টা সিগারেট ক্ষতিকর হচ্ছে কমপিউটারের জন্য - তারা কতোখানি ধোঁয়াকে ক্ষতিকারক বলছেন জানা যাচ্ছেনা। সাধারনভাবে বাড়িতে ব্যবহৃত একটি কমপিউটার A.C. ঘরের মধ্যে থাকেনা, এবং সেই বাড়িতে যদি একজন ব্যাক্তিও ধূমপায়ী হন, তাহলেই warranty void হচ্ছে, Applecare'এর মতে।

ব্যাপারটা এমন দাঁড়াচ্ছে যে ধূমপায়ীদের কমপিউটার সার্ভিসিং করবেনা Apple, শুধু তাই নয়, ব্যবহারকারীর বাড়িতে অন্য কোনো ব্যাক্তি ধূমপায়ী হলেও সার্ভিসিং করবেনা তারা। Applecare জানাচ্ছে যে এটিকে তারা biohazard হিসেবেই ধরছেন। আমরা সকলেই জানি যে সিগারেটের ধোঁয়া স্বাস্থ্যের পক্ষে ক্ষতিকারক, যিনি ধূমপান করছেন তার জন্যও যেমন ক্ষতিকর, যিনি তার আশেপাশে আছেন তার জন্যও সমান ক্ষতিকর। কিন্তু যেটা নিয়ে প্রশ্ন উঠেছে তা হচ্ছে যে Apple তাদের এই নিয়ম warranty terms & conditions'এর মধ্যে কেন জানাচ্ছে না? নিয়মে লিখে না দিলে কি তারা সার্ভিস দিতে অস্বীকার করতে পারে, এতে কি আইনত বাঁধা নেই?

সাধারন একজন ব্যবহারকারী Apple'এর মতো বড় কোম্পানীর নামে মামলা ঠুকে দিতে পারেনা কারন আইনি পদক্ষেপ নিতে অনেক খরচ হয় বলে। সেইজন্যই কি Apple এইভাবে terms & conditions'এর বাইরের শর্তগুলিও ইচ্ছেমতো আরোপ করে দিচ্ছে গ্রাহকদের উপরে? নিচে দিচ্ছি গ্রাহকদের ইমেইলের কপি, আপনারাই বাকিটা বোঝার চেষ্টা করুন। ভবিষ্যতে দামী ব্র্যাণ্ডেড Apple কমপিউটার কেনার আগে ভেবে নেবেন, ওয়ার‌্যান্টি আপনি নাও পেতে পারেন যদি আপনার কমপিউটারের আশেপাশে কেউ ধূমপান করে।

I took my mid 2007 apple macbook (black) into the Jordan Creek Apple Store in West Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday, April 25th, because I had been experiencing some issues with it overheating, and figured the fan was bad. After some initial testing, they took the computer in for work under my Applecare plan, which has over a year remaining on it.

Today, April, 28, 2008, the Apple store called and informed me that due to the computer having been used in a house where there was smoking, that has voided the warranty and they refuse to work on the machine, due to "health risks of second hand smoke".

Not only is this faulty science, attributing non smoking residue to second hand smoke, on Chad's part, no where in your applecare terms of service can I find anything mentioning being used in a smoking environment as voiding the warranty.

I bought an iMac for my son (for school) along with the extended Applecare warranty. A month ago, it quit working. My son took it to the authorized Mac service center. The "tech" informed him it would be ready in 48-72 hours. Five days go by and he's heard nothing, so I called. They informed me that his computer can't be worked on because it's contaminated.

When I asked for an explanation, she said he's a smoker and it's contaminated with cigarette smoke which they consider a bio-hazard! I checked my Applecare warranty and it says nothing about not honoring warranties if the owner is a smoker. The Applecare representative said they defer to the technician and my son's computer cannot be fixed at any Apple Service Center due to being listed a bio-hazard.

This computer cost approx. $3,000, with the extended warranty. I'm all for destroying cigarettes and putting big tobacco out of business (yes, I'm a reformed smoker), but to label a computer a biohazard because one is a smoker is going a bit too far in regulating who can have the warranty they purchased honored. Shouldn't there be some disclaimer stating that they won't honor warranties from smokers?

I own a mac and live in Oklahoma. Recently the burner stopped working. We have AppleCare so we took it in 2 days ago for repair. We just recieved a call today stating we needed to come get it because they are refusing to work on it due to health hazards from second hand smoke due to OSHA violations.
